Charles Schumer (Dem.)

Sen. Charles Schumer

Charles Schumer has risen from his days as a combative Queens Congressman to become one of the country’s most powerful Senators. As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and Chairman of the Immigration Subcommittee, he plays a leading role in shaping American immigration policy.

During his long career in Washington, Schumer has been deeply engaged in issues effecting immigrants and he has gathered together a knowledgeable staff. Schumer’s exhaustive work to secure passage of immigration reform is undeniable, but the failure of the Immigration Subcommittee to produce a bill after many false starts in 2010 left his many supporters in the immigrant community disappointed. The inability of the Democratic leadership to pass the DREAM Act even with the support of several Republican Senators compounded the sense of an opportunity lost. The only piece of immigration-related legislation to become law was an enforcement-only bill that Senator Schumer co-sponsored.

Schumer was not to blame for the lack of progress on comprehensive immigration reform. That can be lain at the feet of the tea party insurgency and the fear it sowed among moderate Republicans and Democrats from red states. Given the dramatic shift within the Republican Party, it may have been impossible to pass any positive legislation in 2010.

Senator Schumer’s growing power in Congress, his high level of popularity among New York voters, and his superior knowledge of immigration policy acquired over decades of daily engagement with the millions of immigrants he represents position him to renew the fight for reform if the political terrain changes in 2012.
