Report Card

Yvette Clarke represents a Congressional District in the heart of Brooklyn. It includes Park Slope, Crown Heights, Prospect Park South, and the vibrant Caribbean community centered on Church Avenue in Flatbush. The district has been home to New York immigrants since the mid-1800s, and has neighborhoods like Haitian “La Saline” in East Flatbush, and Midwood which has one of the largest concentrations of Pakistani immigrants in America. Nearly a quarter of the district’s population traces its roots back to the Caribbean.

Yvette Clarke is the daughter of Jamaican immigrants and the scion of a family heavily active in New York politics. Her mother, Una Clarke, was the first Jamaican immigrant elected to the City Council.

In Congress, Clarke has been a strong advocate for immigrant rights and has played a role in aligning the Congressional Black Caucus with the push for immigration reform. She has served as a welcome bridge between African American and immigrant concerns at a time when anti-immigrant activists tried to pit Blacks against newcomers.

Clarke is a sponsor of both the DREAM Act and Rep. Luis Gutierrez’s Comprehensive Immigration Reform ASAP bill.
