Report Card
The Fourteenth Congressional District takes in much of the East Side of Manhattan, including the island’s traditional immigrant quarter on the Lower East Side, and crosses over the bridge to Irish Sunnyside, revitalized Long Island City, and the incredibly diverse neighborhood of Astoria.
The district’s representative Carolyn Maloney played an important role in making sure immigrant communities were at the table after the 9/11 terrorist attacks to help plan the rebuilding of New York. More recently, she has been a strong advocate for immigrant visas that help develop the city’s financial infrastructure and she has been active in helping to minimize the Census undercount of immigrants.
Maloney is a co-sponsor of the DREAM Act, which would help undocumented immigrants brought here as children earn their legal status, and of Rep. Luis Gutierrez’s Comprehensive Immigration Reform ASAP bill.
