Report Card
The 17th Congressional District spans three counties and includes immigrants from around the world. The district includes traditionally Irish neighborhoods like Woodlawn in the Bronx, large Caribbean and Brazilian communities in Mount Vernon and surrounding areas in Westchester and the northern Bronx, and the growing Haitian community in Rockland’s Suffern. Nearly one-in-four people living in the district is Latino.
Eliot Engel has represented the 17th Congressional District for more than two decades. During that time he has consistently supported immigrant rights, although advocate wish he would play more of a leadership role in passing a comprehensive immigration reform in Congress.
In 2010, Engel was challenged by a tea party Republican who attacked the Congressman’s pro-immigrant stance. Engel easily won re-election.
