Report Card
The 25th Congressional District is centered in Syracuse and stretches westward to the Rochester suburbs. The district is one of the least ethnically diverse in the state with less than 5% of the population being Latino or Asian American.
Democrats have held a slight edge in the traditionally Republican region in recent years, but Democratic freshman Dan Maffei was knocked off by Republican challenger Ann Marie Buerkle in November, 2010.
Buerkle was supported by the tea party in her run for Congress. She has made no major policy remarks on immigration, although she has said she favors allowing more temporary workers to come to perform farm labor but opposes an “amnesty”.
Buerkle cannot feel comfortable in her seat. On Feb. 9, 2011 Politico rated the district as one of the ten most likely in the country to flip in the next election.
