Report Card
Steve Israel’s Second Congressional District straddles Suffolk’s South Shore. It is the most immigrant-rich district on Long Island, and Israel has been a tough advocate for the foreign-born.
Suffolk’s political class has made Latino immigration a racially charged issue in the county. Steve Israel, along with First Congressional District Rep. Tim Bishop, has spoken out forcefully against the anti-immigrant policies of Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy. When a hate crime took the life of immigrant Marcelo Lucero in Patchogue, Israel met immediately with immigrant leaders to insure Federal involvement in the volatile situation.
Israel has worked closely with the Long Island Immigrant Alliance to provide a political counter-weight to Levy, and he is well-respected among immigrant leaders on the Island.
Israel is a co-sponsor of the DREAM Act and of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform ASAP bill.
