The Sixth Congressional District occupies the eastern portion of America’s most immigrant county, Queens. The Rockaways have large immigrant communities from Central America and the Caribbean. South Ozone Park is home to many Dominicans and Trinidadians. 18% of people in the district trace their origins to the West Indies.
Meeks has generally been good on immigrant rights issues, so many activists were surprised when he sided with the Minutemen in a 2006 vote barring the Federal government from tipping off Mexican authorities about Minuteman patrols.
Meeks is a co-sponsor of the DREAM Act and the Comprehensive Immigration Reform ASAP bill.
He has the lowest possible rating from anti-immigrant groups.
