Report Card
The Eighth Congressional District begins at Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty and it has long been represented by a Congressman who advocates for the values embodied in those symbols.
Jerry Nadler has been a consistent voice for welcoming immigrants since he came to Congress nearly two decades ago. His safely Democratic district, which is extremely diverse, incorporates the thriving Russian neighborhood of Brighton Beach, Coney Island, Tribeca, Greenwich Village and Manhattan’s West Side. He has received broad support there.
Nadler has been particularly outspoken in favor of marriage equality in immigration and other contexts. He has highlighted the inability of same-sex families to unite because of laws barring recognition by the immigration service of gay and lesbian marriages even when those marriages were legally entered into in the United States.
Nadler has long supported immigration reform. As early as 1999 he was working on a bill to relieve the family immigration visa backlog. He is a cosponsor of the DREAM Act and of Rep. Luis Gutierrez’s Comprehensive Immigration Reform ASAP bill.
