Report Card

Nydia Velazquez has long been a steadfast supporter of immigrants in Congress. Over the last four years, she has emerged as a national powerhouse in the struggle for comprehensive immigration reform.

Velazquez represents one of the most immigrant rich Congressional Districts in the United States, including iconic neighborhoods like Little Italy and Chinatown. The Twelfth Congressional District also includes large immigrant communities in Sunset Park, Carroll Gardens, Williamsburg, Bushwick, and Ridgewood as well as many other neighborhoods.

Velazquez has one of the most secure seats in Congress and an extremely appreciative constituency. This has given her a platform to help lead the national fight for immigrant rights. Her recent election as co-chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus has only enhanced her ability to press for immigration reform.

Outspoken and combative in defense of immigrants, Velazquez sets national strategy in close consultation with New York-based immigrant organizations and she has frequently been honored by them for her efforts.

Velazquez has received the lowest possible ratings from anti-immigrant groups. She is a cosponsor of Rep. Luis Gutierrez’s Comprehensive Immigration Reform ASAP bill and has been a frequent speaker in support of its passage.
