Report Card

The Eighteenth Congressional District takes in most of Westchester County and part of Rockland. Westchester is the most diverse of New York State’s suburban counties, with one-in-four people having been born abroad. The well-organized immigrant community in Westchester has played a major role in making Congressional Representative Nita Lowey a reliable supporter of immigrant rights.

Lowey is among the most powerful members of the New York State Congressional delegation, with seats on important committees and long tenure of office. The large margins of victory she has rolled up in recent reelections makes her seat a safe one.

Lowey is a cosponsor of the DREAM Act and she is seen as approachable by local immigrant leaders on their issues. She has received the lowest possible ratings from anti-immigrant groups. This has left some of her allies puzzled at her failure to cosponsor the Comprehensive Immigration Reform ASAP bill which is supported by 100 of her Democratic colleagues in the House.
