Report Card
Louise Slaughter is remembered by immigration old-timers for her leading role in protecting the rights of immigrant women and children who were the victims of domestic violence. While her district has a small immigrant population, she has had an active interest in assisting vulnerable newcomers, whether they be refugees or trafficked women.
Slaughter has a solid voting record on immigration issues, which has earned her the lowest possible rating from anti-immigrant groups. So, it is a bit surprising that she has not yet signed up as a cosponsor of the two major immigration bills currently before Congress, the DREAM Act and Rep. Luis Gutierrez’s Comprehensive Immigration Reform ASAP. As the first Chairwoman of the House Rules Committee, Slaughter is one of the most powerful Upstate members of Congress and her clout could impact the debate.
Slaughter’s district is the most solidly Democratic one in Western New York. Centered in Rochester, it includes parts of Buffalo and Niagara. Local Republicans have campaigned on an anti-immigrant platform in the past, but without success.
